Eat this not that...

Well adjusting to pregnancy eating has been quite simple. Right before I had already changed my eating habits and bought healthier choice options when available choosing products with words like light, lean, whole grain, less fat, low sodium, high fiber, etc. I already drink 1-2 bottles of water a day and have at least 1 serving of fruits AND veggies a day. I know it's not the best or what's recommended but it was a change. The only big changes has been my complete cut-off of soda and caffeine and obviously alcohol (not that I indulged in it frequently anyways). I did give in the other day and bought caffeine free cherry 7up which is high in antioxidants ;) Something about the carbonated fizziness I was missing. But I have 1 maybe a couple times a week and I never finish the whole thing. Mostly just water, milk, juice, lemonade, gatorade, and tea for me. I was glad to find out I can still have tea! Again in small moderate amounts but hey its still caffeine ;) My nurse said I can still have soda and coffee as long as I keep it to 8oz a day, but I cut it out all together. One thing I found out which I was shocked I didn't know is no lunch meat?!? Of any kind, fresh or not, none whatsoever, unless of course it's cooked at 160* ;)  Threw me off a bit because I frequent Subway and Togo's a lot. But I'll have to make sure to get my sandwiches toasted or my meat cooked. I have to say I'm having a harder time with cutting back my cold cut sammiches more-so then coffee and soda! But I was happy to learn that I can still have my tuna :) Canned chunky light in water is okay to have twice a week as long as I only have 1 serving which is only about 3oz but still is enough for me :) The only real craving so far has been egg salad sandwiches which was what brought me to write this blog. I'm totally craving one again and I'm about to go make myself one for lunch :)

  1. Yep, lunch meat is usually filled with these things called "nitites" and "nitrates" and other preservatives to help the meat keep its attractive color. If it didn't have that stuff, it would turn brown, and companies like oscar meyer and hilshire farms would lose money on lower sales :)

I was surprised too to learn lunch meat was not good for you. Apparently those types of preservatives have known health risks such as pancreatic cancer. Bummer! I empathize with you because when I started to try to eat healthy I figured making a turkey sandwhich on wheat was about as healthy as you can get.

Anyway, I'm happy to report there is a solution! Just stay away from processed meats, any type of meat in a package. A great alternative though is rotisserie chicken or turkey. You can buy those at any grocery store for 5-8 bucks and then use that meat for you sandwiches.

So you can switch from subway with a diet coke to a home made rotisserie chicken sandwich with a glass of ice water and lemon :) Not too bad!

  2. Haha thanks Bill! Yeah sandwiches have always been a fave of mine but I've been sticking to PB&J, egg salad, and tuna for now. But the rotisserie chicken is a great idea! Bob loves those sandwiches too on a deli roll, good thinking ;) And I'm all about the ice water with sliced lemon! So crisp and refreshing! And I do lemonade too which is funny because my mom said that when she was pregnant with my sister that she used to eat lemons like an orange! Not sure that would fly too well with me though ;)
